Newsgroups & Discussions About Homebuilding, Home Repair, Design & Construction

Usenet newsgroups can be a great source of information. At last check, there were more than 24,000 active discussion groups with new groups being created almost every day. Each group will have its favorite topics and frequent posters. You are likely to be able to exchange ideas about most any topic with knowledgeable people from all around the world.

If you are new to Usenet, you may want to spend a little time "lurking" (just reading what others are saying) before you jump into the conversations. When you decide to join in, you will do well to keep several things in mind - be careful what you say and how you say it because everything you write will probably remain somewhere on the Internet for a very long time, and there are far more "experts with answers", than expert answers.

When you read the replies to the questions that are asked by the group, keep in mind that they will not all be correct. Many knowledgeable people post to these newsgroups, but there are also many others that actually know less than they think about the questions being asked. Even when a person is well versed in the subject to which they are responding, it can be very difficult to thoroughly diagnose a problem from halfway around the world, or provide the best solution for your particular situation in a few paragraphs - without ever having seen the situation first hand. Often, questions are asked and answered without all the pertinent information being known. Additionally, since building codes and methods will vary in different parts of the world, a solution that is correct in one region may not be applicable in other locations.

Usenet discussion groups allow the sharing of different opinions and the ability to gather new information from a vast user base. However, it will be your responsibility to weed out the sarcastic remarks, inaccurate answers by well meaning people, and you will need to thoroughly investigate the suggested solutions to the problems that are discussed.

Before you post your question to a newsgroup, it is a good idea to search the archives to see if it has already been asked and answered.

Enter descriptive keywords in the above form to search thousands of newsgroups for specific information on the topic of your choice. You may also want to check the postings in news.announce.newusers for more information on how to participate in Usenet discussions.
